#UCEM100: Introducing the plans for our Centenary year!

Posted on: 2019-01-07

Today (7 January, 2019) is the day we officially launch our centenary year – a moment we have been building up to for many months! What’s special about today, you may wonder?

Well…

  1. We have launched the centenary section of our website

There are five areas that the centenary landing page will take you to. The first is entitled ‘Our history’ and features a plethora of interesting articles, photos and videos from the archives. There is an ‘Our stories’ section which includes information about our centenary events and activities with submissions to our ‘Memory box’ and ‘Time capsule’, birthday wishes to UCEM on reaching its grand old age and wisdom shared by staff, students and alumni alike. The third area of the centenary section is ‘Centenary events’ (more on this below) and the fourth is ‘Centenary Fund’ (again, more below).

Excitingly, the final area of the centenary section of the website is the ‘UCEM shop’, showcasing a range of high-quality UCEM branded stationery, apparel, gifts and keepsakes.

The website will be updated regularly throughout the year so bookmark it now!

  1. Centenary Fund

Today marks the launch of the UCEM Centenary Fund, designed to raise money to help 100 students embark on a programme of study with us and progress their career in the Built Environment.

The awards will be made during the 2019/20 academic year and will be based on academic ability, demonstration of commitment to entering the surveying profession and financial need.

Applications are open to both UK and international students considering a programme of study with UCEM at any academic level.

May – UCEM history book launch:

Having charted the first 50 years of The College of Estate Management and the period of 1969-1992 in the first two volumes of UCEM’s history, it was only right that the final piece of the puzzle was completed in time for our centenary.

Covering 1992-2018, the third volume explores a momentous period for the institution, which has seen great changes made to futureproof the institution while ensuring it retains its core identity and vision, preserving its legacy past the first century.

Tuesday 10 September – Reading Museum exhibition opens:

Our co-produced exhibitions with Reading Museum and the Museum of English Rural Life (MERL), entitled ‘Celebrating 100 years of University College of Estate Management: Building Futures 1919-2019’, will chart the institution’s history and feature artefacts and photos from our archives previously unseen by the public. The exhibition will be open for three months, and is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Wednesday 11 September – Student and alumni event (London):

In the build up to September’s student and alumni event, we will demonstrate the ongoing positive social and environmental impact UCEM students and graduates are having in the Built Environment. The projects will be showcased at the event, held at the prestigious Lincoln’s Inn in London, at which industry-leading UCEM alumni will share pioneering projects of their own.

Thursday 19 September – Housing for Good in Reading: The Built Environment of the Future event:

We will launch our exhibition at Reading Town Hall with a public evening lecture in Reading Town Hall in collaboration with Launchpad – who also celebrate their 40th anniversary this year – and themed around the creation of affordable, long-term and sustainable housing.

  1. Centenary blog

This very blog you are reading is the first of our monthly blogs shining a light on our centenary. Look out for it each month. The content, with the exception of this article and the final blog in December, is linked to three themes: inspiring women in the Built Environment; iconic buildings; and the two World Wars.

These are just six of the announcements we will be making throughout our centenary year. There will be plenty more for our students, alumni and supporters to listen out for, as well as lots of centenary content on our social media channels to join in with. To keep up-to-date throughout 2019, sign up to our newsletter and follow our accounts on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram.
